Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying these medications should be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you become starving," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
