The anticipation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
