European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the case was “another example” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
