Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
